The Four Most Common Problems Treated With Orthotics

Arthritis is a common disease that can affect the joints, skin, and various internal organs. Often thought to be a disease only for the elderly, the majority of Canadians living with arthritis are under the age of 65. In fact, 1 in 6 Canadian adults suffer from some form of arthritis.
A Pedorthist can help patients retain and enhance mobility through proper footwear, suitbale footwear selection and/or custom orthotics, which will support and align the joints of the foot and help to ease the pain.

Do you experience heel pain when you get out of bed or after sitting for a long time? If so, you may be one of the millions of North Americasn who suffer from plantar fasciitis.
It’s often the result of how you foot moves, trauma, weight gain, or changes in activity, all of which can cause inflammation of the plantar fascia – the broad, fibrous band of tissue that starts at your heel and ends at your toes.
Treatment usually includes custom or over-the-counter orthotics, changes to activity, and stretching.

Metatarsalgia is a term used to describe a group of conditions that cause pain, burning, or discomfort under the ball of the foot or in the toes. The main symptom is pain at the ball of your foot when standing or walking.
Casused when the soft tissue around the head of the metatarsal bones becomes inflamed, it often improves with rest. But it can also be prevented and treated with proper=fitting shoes, activity specific footwear, custom-made orthotics or over-the-counter orthotics.

Some people living with diabetes might experience reduced circulation or sensation in their feet and may not be able to feel something irritating in their show. This can result in a wound or ulcer which can be dangerous and could ultimately result in hospitalization or even amputation.
Shoe selection and custom or over-the-counter ortotics are part of a treatment plan that also includes visual inspections and good hygiene.
